Exchange Programs

About the Exchange

Exchange students from Funabashi attend California State University, East Bay, and other students from Hayward attend school in the city of Funabashi. They will have the great privilege of experiencing the joy of a home stay in Japan. Families who wish to host a student from Funabashi or have students visit their homes when they are studying here or during the holiday season are always welcome. Individuals who speak Japanese are also needed to assist periodically with translating.

One of the schools who host this cultural exchange regularly is Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward with the Ichifuna High School in Funabashi. Moreau Catholic High School and Ichifuna High School have a Sister School affiliation, which makes this exchange flow easily. Student exchanges occur annually, usually with American students visiting Funabashi around June and Japanese students visiting Hayward around September.

Periodic visits to Funabashi by individuals or groups of citizens foster and renew friendships, build bridges to cultural understanding and initiate business relationships. Similar visits to Hayward by Funabashi residents help cement our relationship.

Moreau's 2016 Visit

In October 2016, a delegation of 55 citizens, led by the Mayor of Hayward, visited Funabashi for the 30th anniversary of the Sister City relationship. Delegates included city officials, members of the Sister City Committee, local business leaders, and the Moreau Catholic Jazz Ensemble. Citizens participated in a tree planting ceremony in Andersen Park, enjoyed the Funabashi Music Street Festival, and visited local schools and businesses. The event further strengthened the relationship between the two cities, which officially began in 1986.
